Clinical Overview

A sprain is an incomplete tear of a ligament. Any of the knee ligaments can be sprained.

Causes

  • Knee injury
  • Other injuries or accidents (such as an auto accident)

Risk Factors
Activities that can put you at risk for a ligament injury include impact sports like skiing, running, skateboarding, roller skating, ice skating and contact sports.

A heavy purse over the shoulder would pull your body weight towards the outside (lateral) side of your knee. In case of such knee pain cases, you should certianly visit your orthopedic surgeon.
