Seattle Mariners centerfielder Mike Cameron strained a ligament in his left knee during the team’s June 5th game and may be placed on the disabled list.

Cameron is scheduled for reevaluation this week. “If he can’t play for seven to 10 days,” said Seattle manager Lou Piniella, “then we’ll probably have to ‘DL’ him.”

Over the weekend, Cameron underwent MRI testing to assess the damage. The results matched the original diagnosis of team doctors, who said that Cameron was suffering from a mild ligament sprain. Immediately after he injured his knee, his coach decided to let him play on a day-to-day basis with an exam scheduled for June 11th.

The sprain is “relatively minor,” according to Mariners’ head trainer Rick Griffin. “We’ll have him get in the water, then we’ll ice and steam it, and he’ll do some weight exercises to keep the muscles strong. We were glad to see that the results were what we hoped they would be. Everyone agrees that we’re pretty lucky that this is all the damage.”

Cameron sprained his ligament sliding past second base during the game. Earlier in the season, he injured his right knee by running into the wall at Fenway Park to catch a fly ball.
