Davis hopes to return in April

Terrell Davis Hopes for April Return

December 28, 1999   DENVER (AP) -- Encouraged by his rehabilitation, Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis said he hopes to return to practice by April.

Since tearing ligaments in his right knee four weeks into the season, Davis has been doing extensive rehabilitation that has included running on a treadmill and working out in the Broncos' weight room.

``When is minicamp?' Davis said Monday. ``Late April? I think by minicamp, I should be ready to go. Whether they let me go full speed or not, I don't know yet. I'm optimistic about it, but if I don't feel right, I'm not going to go push it.'

He started running 100-yard sprints last week and can squat more than 300 pounds, a progression that has left Davis confident about his ability to return to the form that earned him the league MVP award last season.

``It's been that dramatic,' he said. ``If it improves the same amount from now over the next two months, I'll be Superman. Super strong.'

Davis, one of only four running backs in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, is one of nine Denver starters to incur a season-ending injury in 1999.

In Davis' place, the Broncos have turned to rookie Olandis Gary, who has run for 936 yards in 10 games, giving Denver a double threat in the backfield next year.

``It's nice to have depth,' coach Mike Shanahan said. ``Terrell has great elusiveness. He can hit and then cut here and cut there. Olandis is more of a power runner. He runs through tacklers. Our defensive people didn't want to hit him because he'd run right over them.'
